Khoon Yu Tan - Math Instructional Practice Coach
Khoon Yu Tan, better known as Tan (pronounced “tahn”), is a math teacher, department chair, and instructional practice coach at John H Reagan High School in Houston, TX. He has partnered with Rice University, University of Houston Downtown, and Houston Community College in advocating for teacher and student success in the advancement of math teaching and learning. In the summer of 2016, Tan will be one of roughly 30 Teach For America Corps Member Advisors nationwide to groom the next batch of TFA recruits.
He is the recipient of the 2014-15 Teacher of the Year Award at Reagan, former Houston ISD finalist for the Gates Recruitment Fellowship, Texas statewide semi-finalist for the 2011 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, and coach of the mathematics team who won the 2013 UIL State general math event. Teaching AP Calculus for the first time in 2013-14, he led 44 students to above-expected results on the renowned test and was consequently honored by Houston ISD.
Tan received his B.Sc. from the University of Michigan in mathematics and statistics on a full-ride scholarship.
